Mobilia - Award-Winning Urban Qualities in Former Textile Quarters
Malmö has an atmosphere where history, future, trend, and tradition mingle effortlessly. This is precisely the feeling we want to convey in Mobilia, where our urban quarter encapsulates the best that Sweden's third-largest city has to offer.
In recent years, Mobilia has evolved from a shopping center into an attractive urban environment where commerce and offices meet residential and cultural spaces. Today, the quarter includes 350 apartments, a preschool, and the children's cultural center Funnys Äventyr. The healthcare initiative c/o Mobilia already hosts several operations, with plans for an office building as well.
With its origins in the old textile factory, Mobilia is a true architectural gem. In 1899, the textile factory Manufakturaktiebolaget moved into its new premises and was then one of Malmö's largest employers. Production ceased in the 1960s, but traces of the industrial heritage can still be seen today. We have made significant progress in transforming the former textile factory from a shopping center into a vibrant urban quarter. The unique character of the buildings has been preserved and combined with modern architecture and sustainable materials. Several brick facades have been reconstructed with recycled bricks, and the cast iron windows in the machine house have been preserved. Here, old meets new, giving Mobilia a distinct soul and a unique character.
Torghuset - New Building with Housing, Retail, Cinema, and Cultural Center
Torghuset is an extension for housing, retail, restaurants, and cultural activities, covering approximately 13,000 sqm of leasable area. With the new Torghuset, the connections between Mobilia's different parts have become clearer, and we can further develop the central square for an even more vibrant and attractive urban environment. In addition to 74 rental apartments, the building houses Nordisk Film with its state-of-the-art cinema, several shops and restaurants, and Funnys Äventyr, a 3,000 sqm cultural center for children focused on play, reading, and learning. The initiative is led by Staffan Götestam, playwright and director, and one of the founders of Junibacken in Stockholm. In addition to contributing to an increased cultural offering for children in the Öresund region, the initiative aims to address the issue of declining literacy among children and young people.
